Abstract

ABSORPTION of gases by aluminium is well known 1-3 and many workers`-4-6 have investigated into the problem of porosity in castings. This paper deals chiefly with the effect of absorbed gases on the fluidity of molten aluminium and elucidates the relationship between fluidity and viscosity. It is shown that gases absorbed in molten aluminium profoundly affect both the fluidity and viscosity of the metal and that the melting rather than the casting atmosphere chiefly influenced its fluidity. The results obtained also indicate the significance of temperature control in the melting of aluminium.
