Abstract

Indigenous development of electroslag cladding technique for producing a bimetallic joint was attempted in the present project. The joint produced successfully was subjected to different characterization techniques. Radiography and ultrasonic methods revealed the joint was free from cracks, pores, slag, inclusions, etc. The as. cast joint remained inact after 5:1 hammer forging. OM, EPMA, microhardness studies indicated that the interface was 20 mm width and free from any inclusions, pores. The delta ferrite was found to be in the required level so that the problems of hot cracking, sensitization and hydrogen induced debonding will not take place. Qualitative tensile tests indicated that the bond was strong.
