Abstract

Titaniferrous magnetite ore which is widely available in India and elsewhere, undergoes complicated reactions during smelting with suitable reductaut and flux to yield vanadium enriched slag Roasting of the ore or the vanadium rich slag with sodium salt and addition of mineral acids to the water leach solution of the roasted product precipitates . sodium-hexavanadate or `Red cake' and produces ferro vanadium. The chemistry of extraction is essential to understand the pyro-metallurgical and hydro-metallurgical steps involved in the process.
