Abstract
Electric arc furnace steel contains about 70.120 ppm nitrogen. For good quality bar and flat rolled product, which requires below30 ppm nitrogen , denitrogenation is essential. Existing vacuum degassing processes can remove upto 15% nitrogen. However, no other suitable method for removal of nitrogen from EAF steel to the desired level is available. This paper reviews the research work carried out by previous investigators and discusses the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of absorption-desorption of nitrogen and denitrogenation through gas phase and slag phase. The effect of different alloying elements on nitrogen solubility of steel is also discussed.
