Abstract

Recent advancement on materials has been focused on the development of nanomaterials and composites with improved functional and structural properties. To achieve tailored and consistent properties throughout the bulk, it is desirable to understand the nature and extent of grain boundary phases. Alloy compositions and process parameters need to be fine tuned to improve the stability and ductility of the materials for application point of view.To address the above problems a CSIR network project on "Nanostructured Advanced Materials" is in progress at National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, as a nodal laboratory with eight other CSIR laboratories as partners. Major emphasis of this project is to develop processes for development of nanostructured materials and products. Four major areas that NML is working on nanostructured materials are (a) Bio-materials and Processes, (b) Superhard & TBC Coatings and Composites, (c) Magnetic Materials and (d) Structural Materials.
