Abstract

The underlying principles and algorithm for developing a computer programme for estimation of free settling terminal velocities of particles have been discussed. The programme, written in BASIC language, selects the appropriate equation for estimation of terminal velocity, depending on a particular combination of properties of particles (size and density) and the medium of suspension (density and velocity). The estimated values of terminal velocities are printed out in a convenient tabular form, along with the relevant parameters and an indication of the condition of flow, as determined by each combination of the parameters. The programme is user-friendly and can deal with any range and increment-level specified by the user, for each of the parameters. Possible modifications of the programme, to suit a variety of conditions have also been discussed in the paper.
