Abstract

As there are abundant resources of manganese and aluminium in this country, a programme of research was taken up at the National Metallurgical Laboratory with a view to develop permanent magnets from Mn and Al metals. As a first step it was considered necessary to investigate in detail the phase transformations taking place in these alloys under various conditions of heat treatment to identify the exact conditions leading to the formation of ferro-magnetic phases in these alloys. The experiments present in the present investigation were mainly confined to near the Mn1-1 Al 0.88 composition. (Mr. C.R.
