Abstract
Indian non-ferrous metal industry has to fit in the general background of exacting specificational require-ments of the finished products, lowered operational costs and increased productivity together with the complex problems of matching up with the needs of imported techno-logy and equipment to digest indigenous raw materials. To meet this challenge the National Metallurgical Laboratory has, since its inception placed special emphasis on research and development work on non-ferrous metallurgy by undertaking systematic work on improvement of indigenous non-ferrous ores, recovery of metals from wastes, techniques of extraction of non-ferrous metals, development of substitute alloys and also on basic problems on the properties of non-ferrous metals and alloys.
