Abstract

The binders based on cellulose materials are a recent entry in the field of foundry core binders. Two samples of indigenously produced cellulose materials which are sodium salts of carboxymethyle cellulose and known as Cellpro were evaluated to study their suitability as foundry core binders. The cellulose binders, it was observed, can be used satisfactorily for green, dry or baked cores when used as a sole binder. In the sand mixture, Cellpro percentage addition should be maintained between 3 and 5 percent to obtain optimum core properties. The Cellpro can also be used to obtain optimum core properties. The Cellpro can also be used in the range of 0.5-1% and with 1.0% linseed oil developed superior baked properties as compared to conventional straight linseed oil bonded cores. The volume of gas given by Cellpro binders was less than that, evolved by the linseed oil. The casting trials with Cellpro bonded cores showed easy collapsibility and good shake out characteristics.
