Abstract

Most phosphating baths are sludge forming which makes handling of the solution and operation of the bath difficult. In recent years, non-sludge-forming baths have been developed although their applications have not been extensive. In this investigation, non-sludge forming zinc phosphate bath has been examined. Various experiments carried out to study the characteristics of phosphate coatings, e.g., coating composition, protective properties etc., using both sludge and non-sludge-forming solutions have been outlined. Addition of non-sludge forming compounds effectively checked sludge formation and gave a good phosphate coating comparable to that obtained from the conventional zinc phosphate bath. (Messrs K.P.
