Abstract

A rapid routine for the determination of manganese in presence of high chromium had been developed which did not require the prior separation of manganese from chromium. This was possible by oxidizing both chromium and manganese by ammonium persulphate in presence of 3-4% (V/V) H2SO4 and 4% (V/V) phosphoric manganate equivalent for chromium and manganese and that for chromium alone. The amount of manganese present was then calculated from the difference between the two titres. The method has been successfully applied in the analysis of manganese-bearing stainless steel and is equally applicable to other alloy steels containing appreciable amounts of both chromium and manganese.
