Abstract

Spectrographic analysis of high chromium-manganese-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel by porous cup technique, using neutral filter has been outlined in this paper. This method allows rapid and accurate determination of high percentage of chromium and manganese in nickel-free austenitic stainless steel. Chromium up to 25 percent and manganese up to 18 percent have been estimated with an accuracy of ± 4 percent using high voltage condensed spark. Neutral filter has been used to reduce the high intensity of the chromium and manganese analytical lines by about 90 percent. This technique is also suitable for determining chromium and nickel in nickel-bearing austenitic stainless steels. (Mr. M.K. Ghose, Junior Scientific Officer; Mr. S.
