Abstract

The influence of rolling on the microstructureand the grain-refining efficiency of Al-5Ti master alloy that has been prepared by addition ofTi sponge to molten AI has been studied in detail. Rolling of AI-5Timasteralloy has resulted in significant refinement in TiAI3 particle size and change in its morphology from plate like to blocky type. The mean particle size of TiAI3 has decreased with increase in the rolling reduction levels. The grain refining performance of the master alloy has improved with increase in the rolling reduction levels. These changes are attributed to the fracture of TiAI3particles during rolling, which results in an increase in the number of nucleating sites for Al.
