Abstract

The influence of simulated sea water vis-a-vis air on fatigue crack growth behaviour in two Cu-strengthened HSLA steels at different R-ratios and frequencies has been investigated. These studies have been substaintiated with crack closure measurements. The results indicate that the influence of microstructure and R-ratio on FCGR and CFCGR of these steels can be explained primarily using crack closure concepts. The effect of frequency on CFCGR is elucidated through fractographic records of changes in the crack growth mechanisms.
