Abstract
It has been acknowledge that the pattern of research in underdeveloped countries should be application oriented rather than basic to evolve new techniques best situated to the local resources and means, and this is especially so to our country which embarked on heavy industrialisation. No country in the World is self-sufficient as regards the metal and mineral requirements and yet increasing numbers of metals and alloys are being developed for diverse application and this largely due to the systematic scientific research designed to meet the demands of the technologist from the available resources. In India, this demand emerged after independence when the need was felt for expansion and effective utilisation of the country’s resources in metals and minerals, more so that present juncture when the country’s resources in men and minerals are geared to the speedy establishment of heavy industries.
