Abstract
A mathematical modelling methodology is presented to simulate the electromagnetic stirring and
macrosegregation phenomena during solidification of continuously cast high carbon steel for developing a
theoretical framework to optimise the process in terms of the process parameters such as, the stirring force, stilTing
pattern and location ofthe stirrer along the solidification pool in the final solidification zone. The stirring thrust has
been determined from the solution of the transport equation of magnetic field derived from the MHD approximation
of Maxwell's electromagnetic field equations. Solidification and thermal process model envisages interdendritic
tluid tlow in the mushy zone coupled with solute redistribution mechanisms and thermal transport phenomena
during phase change which intluences the macrosegregation mechanism. Some of the simulation results are
presented to depict the effects of process parameters and electromagnetic stirring
