Abstract

Urban wastewater is highly complex-associated with a wide variety of pollutants generated by different sources including those of restaurants, milk and meat processing units. The purification of urban wastewater was studied by electro-flotation technique, elucidating the effects of electrode material and current density on the removal of suspended solids, phosphate, BOD and COD and discussing the results. Aluminum as an anode was found to be effective compared to graphite and titanium coated with Ir/Ta/Ru oxide. Electro-flotation appears to be promising, particularly to eliminate pathogenic bacteria, which is primarily due to the in-situ formation of nascent chlorine.
