Abstract
Considerable progress has already been made in under-standing the basic phenomena underlying corrosion in boilers of thermal power plants. Similarly a vast amount of data has accummulated on c reep and fatigue damages
enabling us to estimate the remaining life. Instrum-entation and controls have also progressed remarkably
over the last few years. In the light of the above, emphasis is gradually shifting from understanding the problems to evolving appropriate strategies for manag-ement. Questions arise with respect to desirability of stress on prevention as opposed to protection. The sele- ction of various possible strategies is based on flexi-bility. degree of uncertainity and economy as also the rate of corrosion involved. The paper deals with some of these aspects with suitable examples.
