Abstract

It is proposed that the reduction in area in drawing stainless steel tube is limited by thermal breakdown of the lubricant and that this effectively determines the maximum axial drawing stress that may be attained. A rational drawing schedule is derived based on this constant drawing stress in a manner analogous to that described by Cook and Parker for strip rolling. Experimental results indicate that interstage annealing may be eliminated and that total reductions up to 66% may be achieved in three passes. (Mr. M.J.R. Young and Mr. B. J. Meadows, University of Auston, Birmingham)
