Abstract

Investigations have been made on the electrochemical aspects of stainless steel-corrosion in chlorinated media. During corrosion, chlorine reduction is found to be the dominant cathodic reaction in this environment. The values of potential and current-density have been derived in view of developing an electrochemical protection system for stainless-steels in chlorine containing media. It has been observed that the magnitude of external electric power required to protect a stainless steel, increases with the amount of chlorine dissolved in water (or residual-chlorine in washer filtrates, in case of bleach plants of paper or textile industry). Also, increases in the concentration of chloride, further enhances the need of electrical energy.
