Abstract

Reduction of manganese ore is generally accomplished using either solid or gaseous reductants. The reduced ore is treated with acids to recover manganese as its salts. The present work employs biomass (agricultural wastes, plant pulp etc.), as an innovative reductant along with sulphuric acid to treat a pyrolusitic managanese ore of Indian origin, dissolving 85 to 90% of manganese as manganese sulphate. The process does not involve any heating, bur takes considerable time, spanning two to three weeks. The paper incorporates the results of various process parameters like quantity of biomass, acid concentration, effect of temperature and time.
