Abstract
Several investigators have reported on the thermochemistry of the production of ferrochromium in the submerged are furnace (SAF). In the low temperature regions of the SAF, the kinetics of reduction plays a predominant role. In the high temperature regions, it is reasonable to expect the local thermodynamic equilibrium among the metal, slag and gas to prevail. It is this region that determines the chemistry of the tapped hot metal. A thermochemical analysis based on local thermodynamic equilibria in the high temperature region is reported in the present paper, dividing the region into two major thermochemical zones. The predictions of the present model a re consistent with data reported by industrial plants producing ferrochromium. IS/1333 (C) 1998 The Institute of Materials.
