Abstract
The behaviour of a crack-like flaw in a plate with a hole is studied when the plate is subjected to compressive loading. The numerical finite element model of a ceramic specimen indicated that the crack growth is initially unstable up to a/r 0.2. The compliance function calculated from this model has been compared with experimental results to validate the model. A K-calibration plot is also generated from this model to determine the optimal specimen dimension.
