Abstract
Prevention of deterioration of materials exposed under marine environments is of great importance, considering which the National Metallurgical Laboratory has set up a research station at Digha, on the seacoast facing the Bay of Bengal. The scope and programme of work at this station have already been outlined in the previous paper. Along with various studies, field-tests on atmospheric corrosion for the period of two years from January, 1964 to January 1966. Long term corrosion tests have been started with different metals such as mild steel, aluminium, aluminium alloys, copper, brass, zinc, monel and the progress of corrosion attack on these metals with the period of exposure is being noted. Short term corrosion, monthly corrosion and yearly corrosion are being conducted with mild steel and zinc samples to correlate the corrosion rates with the different variables in the environmental conditions such as seasonal change, fluctuation of daily temperature and humidity, rainfall, dewfall atmospheric pollution, etc. (Messrs A.K.
